As I’ve mentioned before this is only a necessity if you have decided to build your web site shop on your web site and have it sit on the server space you have with your existing Hosting company.
If you’re not sure send them an e-mail and ask. Be straightforward and tell them that you are going to be building a shopping cart on your web site and ask them what they can offer you. Any hosting company worth its salt will let you know right away what they have on offer and, in some cases, this might mean upgrading your account with them - and that’s fair enough.
If they are slow to get back to you or respond unsatisfactorily this might be a good time to consider moving your current, or proposed, site to a more web shop designer friendly host. My personal favorite hosting company is Heart (PS: Don’t forget, dear USA visitors, that your site does not have to be hosted in the USA - that’s the joy of the internet) but there are many others out there and they will make it very easy for you to transfer your Domain Name to them.
If you do it right the transfer should be seamless with no downtime. I’ve done this myself in the past and, while it does seem a bit scary at first, it can be done quickly and efficiently. (PS: If your current hosting company tell you that they are going to charge you to transfer away from them then this tells you that you, and your site, are better off elsewhere! So pay their fee and good riddance!)
