Put simply Open Source software has been created by programmers that have a deep antipathy to the fact that Multi-nationals control the web. OK, that’s a bit simplistic I know but the fact is that the majority of software applications for sale on the web have an Open Source counterpart. The beauty is that the online community improves the software on an ongoing basis. Well that’s the theory and, more often than not is the actual case.
The two shopping cart software programs mentioned above, Agora and OScommerce are two of the most recognised. You will generally have the option to contribute some money or time (or both) to help the programmers and I strongly urge you to do one or both of these things. It’s a bit like supporting the ‘Resistance’ in a war !
I love the idea behind Open Source software and applications. The two shopping cart solutions mentioned above will probably do more than a lot of ‘paid for’ applications you might find on the web. As with most Open Source stuff thay have good Forums where users can ask questions and get a sympathetic ear re set up problems. These forums are quite often better than the Customer Support that you might get from paid for Shopping Cart software!
